Smiths Detection has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Navratna Defense PSU (Public Sector Companies) Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the manufacture of advanced X-ray screening technology in India.
The Memorandum of Understanding between Smiths Detection and BEL will help both companies meet India’s homeland security needs. The MoU was signed in line with the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative which aims to increase manufacturing activity in the Indian market.
Although defense is its mainstay, BEL has explored opportunities in non-defence allied areas such as homeland security and cybersecurity. The MoU fits well with this planned expansion.
With increasing movement of people and goods across critical infrastructure, land borders and urban hotspots, there is a growing need for screening technologies in India. To facilitate the conduct of business and enhance security, the Indian government is investing in port and land border security. Additionally, the required x-ray scanning technology is driven by defense installations, which must screen large volumes of vehicles entering sensitive areas.
BEL will manage the initial market requirements and support the localization of the projects. Smiths Detection will bring its screening technology and technological expertise. The MoU is for five years and can be extended by mutual consent.
